Galatasaray's Hamit Altintop cites lack of experience for Real Madrid defeat
Champions League news: Hamit Altintop bemoans lack of experience for Real Madrid loss
Galatasaray midfielder Hamit Altintop cited a lack of experience as the reason why they slumped to 3-0 away defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie.
The 30-year-old believes the lack of know-how within the team proved crucial as Los Blancos took a massive step forward to securing a semi-final on Europe's grandest stage.
The former Madrid man could not help prevent the Turkish champions from a convincing loss as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain all found themselves on the scoresheet.
The Turkey international feels that the Spanish champions' regularity of competing at the latter stages of this competition each year gave them the ultimate advantage over the Istanbul club.
The attacking midfielder also believes a lack of confidence hindered their chances at the Santiago Bernabeu, but thinks they have quality players and will do everything to win at home.
"We are really sad about the defeat," he told reporters after the match.
"In the first half, both teams were balanced in the game. We also found positions [to score]. But they scored and we didn't.
"They are an experienced team. Every year they fight for the Champions League. This was the difference. I think we have quality players, too, but a lack of confidence."
The Turkish side's winger, Nordin Amrabat, echoed his teammate hoping for a fast start in the return leg and was happy to have featured against the nine time Champions League winners.
"I wanted to come in earlier, but maybe our coach doubted after the first two goals. I'm happy, however, to have played against Real," he told NOS.
"They were better and we did not create many chances. We tried to do our best, but Real is a top team. It's a pity that we didn't score.
"Hopefully we can seal an early 1-0 lead when we play at home, but obviously it will be a difficult match."
