Aleksandar Kolarov has fanned the flames ahead of Monday's Manchester derby by claiming his City side are a better team than United.

The Serbian defender conceded that Premier League-leaders United had been the best team over the course of the current season, but insists City will do their utmost to clinch victory at Old Trafford next week.

"I have to be honest, they have been better this season," Kolarov told Sky Sports News HD. "We have played good, but some games we have made mistakes. Against small teams, we have made a lot of mistakes - away especially.

"They deserve it because they are in first place at the moment. But, for us, that doesn't change anything. We are going to try and win in the game at Old Trafford, to be proud.

"They are confident in this moment and it will be a different game but - if we play like we know, if we are all at 100 per cent - I think we are better than them."

City currently trail Sir Alex Ferguson's men by 15 points with eight matches left to play.

United will be keen to make amends for last season's humiliating 6-1 defeat at Old Trafford - although they went some way to doing that in December, when an injury-time free-kick by summer-signing Robin van Persie secured a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

The Red Devils are likely to start Monday's derby as favourites, having won their last seven Premier League fixtures, but they were dealt a blow at the start of the week with defeat to Chelsea in an FA Cup quarter-final replay at Stamford Bridge.
