Former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt believes Fenerbahce are in the 'perfect situation' after defeating 10-man Lazio in their Europa League quarter-final first-leg.
The Turkish club overcame the Italian outfit 2-0 on Thursday night thanks to goals from Pierre Webo and Kuyt in the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
The hosts were being frustrated by the visitors, but early into the second half Nigerian midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, found himself sent-off for a second bookable offence leaving the Rome based club to complete the rest of the match a man down.
Lazio held out until the the 79th minute when Cameroonian striker slotted home a penalty that was conceded by defender Stefan Radu.
The Romanian was penalised for handball and the experienced striker made no mistake from 12-yards.
Lazio, who currently sit sixth in Serie A, would have been happy to take a 1-0 defeat back to Rome but find themselves having to score three in the return leg after Kuyt poked home a rebound in the 90th minute.
The Netherlands international, who won the Champions League at Anfield, has insisted he knows the possibilities of what can happen in European competitions after Liverpool's famous comeback against AC Milan in 2005.
"It was a very difficult match but that's normal when you play quarter-finals in UEFA competitions," he said, according to UEFA.com.
"We were very efficient and are satisfied with the 2-0 result. To be honest, we're in the perfect situation.
"On the other hand, think that's just the half-time in the overall picture. There's still one very difficult game to play.
"I played for Liverpool and we were 3-0 down after 65 minutes and still won the [UEFA] Champions League, so in football anything is possible. Only if we're really focused we can reach the semi-finals.
"The strategy for the second match will be controlling the game and not giving away any chances for Lazio to score.
"If we can at least score a goal, it will be very difficult for them to come back. But I expect they will strive to score as many goals as they can."
