Manchester United face a transfer battle for Toby Alderweireld as reports claim both Liverpool and Everton are keen on the defender.
The Daily Mail suggest Liverpool and Everton will go head-to-head in the battle to sign the £7million-rated Belgian international, who graduated from the Ajax academy in 2007 and made his debut the following year. He’s been a regular at the Amsterdam Arena ever since.
However, reports in The Daily Express last week claimed Manchester United were tracking the centre-back, and considering a summer bid for the player as his contract moves towards a conclusion in the summer of 2014.
Were Everton boss David Moyes able to bring the 24-year-old to Goodison Park, he’d join compatriots Marouane Fellaini and Kevin Mirallas at the club.
Additionally, Alderweireld would add some strong competition to the Toffees’ back-line, with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin the club’s current first choice pairing.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is in the market for a centre back, with Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season and Sebastian Coates yet to make his mark at Anfield.
And, with the Mail claiming that there are doubts over the futures of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, the Belgian would be a definite boost in the summer transfer window for the Reds.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have plenty of options at centre back, with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all desperate for first team chances.
However, injuries have proved to be an Achilles heel for the Red Devils both domestically and in Europe in the past, and Sir Alex Ferguson is always on the lookout for young players who can strengthen the Premier League champions-elect.
