Five of the best: Outside of the boot finishes (1)

Published 15 Comments

Like a crisp drive through the covers in cricket, no skill leaves football purists purring quite like a perfectly executed pass or finish with the outside of the boot.

There's just something about the action and the result of outside of the foot strike that, if done correctly, makes it as aesthetically pleasing as any aspect in the game - something perfectly highlighted by Dani Alves this week.

The Brazilian provided the assist for the opening Barcelona goal against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, finding Lionel Messi with a ball perfectly weighted and delivered exactly to the specifications of his illustrious colleague.

It may have been simpler for Alves to stand the ball up and over the PSG defence with his left foot, but either down to a lack of ambidextrousness or a streak of audacity, the wing-back played a lofted fader with his right that landed just where Messi wanted it.

Messi, of course, did the rest and finished the chance in trademark fashion, but it was Alves who deserved the plaudits for the stroke of inspiration that allowed Barcelona to unlock the PSG back line.

Alves' hooping looper got GMF thinking about some of our favourite goals to have been scored courtesy of the outside of the boot, and we have picked five - which can be viewed by clicking the numbered tabs above or below.

Now, as always, this is not intended to be a definitive list, but merely a collection of our favourites. There will be debate, of course, and we would encourage you to comment below with your favourites. Enjoy.
