Barcelona: Top five La Masia graduates
Lionel Messi and Xavi feature in the current top La Masia graduates
Barcelona are renowned for their academy. They have produced some of the best players the world has ever seen.
So here is the list of the top five players to have graced the old farmhouse that are currently playing for the Catalans.
5. Sergio Busquets
He is probably the most underrated player in Europe right now. Pep Guardiola promoted Busquets from Barcelona B team after he replaced Frank Rijkaard.
The Midfielder emergence forced Yaya Toure out of the club with his consistent display for Barcelona. The 24-year-old has been extremely successful with Barcelona and Spain since 2008.
4. Carles Puyol
The Catalan warrior is the least technically player on the list but Puyol is the greatest defender to have graduated from La Masia. Puyol has racked up over 500 appearances for Barcelona in a long and illustrious career.
He’s been extremely successful at Barcelona too with a host of La Liga triumphs and Champions League wins lining his medal cabinet.
3. Andres Iniesta
Who can forget his infamous goal against Chelsea in the Champions League Semi-finals? Guillem Balague compared the Spanish international to the legendary Zinedine Zidane. Who can blame him?
Iniesta has been instrumental for Barcelona since he made his debut in 2002. His vision and attacking threat has made him a menace to defences. The Ballon D’or nominee will arguably be the best player in the World if it wasn’t for the extra ordinary Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
2. Xavi Hernandez
Described as the brains of Barcelona. Xavi typify the tika-taka fever that has gripped World Football in the last five years.
Xavi is central to everything and is the key to Barca’s passing, he rarely drops below 100 passes and his success rate is always close to an impressive 95 percent.
Alongside Iniesta, Xavi has taken the World by storm in an era when strong, athletic, box-to-box players are threatening to run riot.
1. Lionel Messi
It's only fitting that the best player in the world takes the number one spot, right?
Lionel Messi continues to break record on a weekly basis. The four time Ballon D’or winner goal against Celta Vigo carried his scoring streak to 19 consecutive La Liga games.
La Pulga has already scored over 300 goals for Barcelona and is the club record goal-scorer at just 25.
