Newcastle United star a transfer target for Russian giants
Newcastle United news: Davide Santon's agent admits Zenit St Petersburg could make a summer move for Italy international
Newcastle's Italian full-back Davide Santon has been contacted by Russian side Zenit St Petersburg regarding a possible summer transfer, according to talkSPORT.
Santon has begun to fulfil his potential which led to him being touted as a "coup" when he signed for The Toon, having started all but one of Newcastle's league games so far this season. However, his embarrassing mistake against Benfica on Thursday cost his side in a 3-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light.
Santon's agent, Renzo Contratto has been quoted in Izvestia.ru as saying: "We have spoken several times with Zenit about Santon, but he is focused on the end of the season with Newcastle.
"I do not know what will happen in the summer, but I believe the club will not let him go for less than a certain amount."
Zenit are likely to face stern competition for Santon's signature with Inter's city rivals AC Milan rumoured to be keen to return the Italian to the city of Milan, whilst Newcastle are unlikely to want to sell for a low price.
Newcastle will be keen to hold on to their full-back, and one has to think if the St. James' Park outfit are to maintain their Premier League status, then they will look to hold on to their star defender.
However, the lure of European football could fuel the Italian's ambitions of playing at the highest level, something that he will not get at Newcastle next season, unless they win the Europa League.
