AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allergi has told Stephan El Shaarawy that Lionel Messi is the only player in world football that manages to score 50 goals a season.
If Messi is the heart of Barcelona, then El Shaarawy carries the same significance to AC Milan.
Milan perhaps made a bargain signing by bringing former Manchester City and Inter Milan star Mario Balotelli to San Siro in January. But a consequence of a dream move for the Italian international is that El Shaarawy has suffered.
Since the imminent arrival of Super Mario, goals have fallen in the lap of the controversial striker rather than the exciting Milan prodigy, and it has become a source of concern for the young man at the San Siro.
El Shaarawy, in the first half of the season, was the leading goalscorer in Serie A, but ever since the arrival of Mario, the goals have certainly dried up for the youngster. El Shaarawy has just netted twice in his last 16 outings for the San Siro-based outfit.
Allergi, however, has lent supporter to the young talisman and has stated that only one player is capable of scoring 50+ goals in a season and that is Messi - the others simply cannot.
"There’s only one player who scores 40 to 50 goals a season and he plays for Barcelona [in reference to Lionel Messi]," he told reporters before the match. "El Shaarawy has scored 16 goals in the first half of the season and it’s normal now that other players will start scoring."
Milan are currently looking to strengthen their grip on the Champions League qualification by winning their forthcoming Serie A matches.
