Roberto Mancini’s side have fallen short of their tremendous title win last year. To win one title isn’t easy, but to maintain footballing quality over a period of time is extremely difficult.
Manchester City’s first league title in 44 years has been followed by a huge slump in form. Looking at the players they’ve got, they shouldn’t be 15 points adrift of the top.
When Manchester United, already a formidable side, picks up the previous season’s top goal scorer, Robin van Persie, they’re always going to step up the title race. But Manchester City still have a great group of players themselves.
Next season will be different. There has been huge speculation about the players that City will bring in to compete with Alex Ferguson’s men next term. They’ll probably have to fill the void left by Mario Balotelli, but other than that their squad is as strong as any other team in the league.
Joe Hart has had a questionable season, he’s had a few questionable performances, but he’s also had some good ones. When you’re in the spotlight all the time, as the England number one is, standards are much higher than they normally are. But he’s probably had more good games than bad this season, and with a bit of work he’ll be back on top next season.
Vincent Kompany has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders for a while now. His strength at the back is something Manchester City counted on in a big way last season, and they’ll be counting on it again next season.
Samir Nasri hasn’t had his best season in professional football this time around. He knows it, Mancini knows it, and we know it.
The guy is a great footballing talent, but he’s been inconsistent since he left Arsenal.
David Silva’s form has been consistent since coming to England. The little Spanish magician has been the standard-bearer for work rate. If all eleven players on the pitch could put in the same effort that Silva does every time he plays then Manchester City might be 10 points closer to United right now.
Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero are two of the best forwards in the game right now. Tevez has had a talismanic quality about him for City, he always has. And Aguero has attributes that any footballer would want; speed accuracy, skill on the ball.
But the two players are quite similar in style. Edin Dzeko is the kind of front man who holds the ball up, and can collect long balls from deep in his own half, but City don’t have a striker that they can bring on in a crisis when Tevez and Aguero have failed.
That’s probably been the difference between themselves and United. It’s not often that Van Persie or Wayne Rooney fail to score, but when they do, United have Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck who bring a completely different aspect to their attacking play.
With another striker, who can bring another dimension to their attacking play, in the same way Hernandez does for United, City will definitely be back challenging for top spot next season.
