Robin van Persie has amassed an impressive 23 goals in 40 appearances this season for Manchester United.

However, with a recent dip in goalscoring form resulting in him not hitting the net in nine club games - the Dutch international has stumbled into his worst goalscoring form for over two years.

This isn’t to say Sir Alex’s new hit-man isn’t playing all that well, it’s quite the opposite actually. He has still been a key component in the Red Devils' recent success and attacking movements, and opposing defenders still can’t contain his world-class movement, technique and set-piece delivery which has left the Old Trafford faithful purring all season.

Many fans were starting to wonder whether the deadly Dutchman needed a rest - after all he has featured in every single Manchester United league game this season, as well as international games for Holland.

However, the United boss was quick to dismiss any suggestions his star signing needed a rest and one thing is for sure, he certainly will not be rested in the eagerly anticipated derby match tonight.

Manchester United’s autocratic manager will be hoping Van Persie can end his baron spell and emphatically put an end to this somewhat comfortable league campaign for Manchester United.

And what a way it would be for the 29-year-old to end his goal draught; in the biggest game of the season for both teams, the Manchester derby. The derby which ended in a disastrous 1-6 defeat for red side of Manchester the last time the two played at Old Trafford last season.

A game which has a city divided with allegiances for both the Citizens and the Red Devils - a goal in such a high-profile match between the Premier League's top two teams would certainly help everyone forget about the recent relative goal draught.

I think football fans around the country can all unanimously agree that Van Persie has made a huge impact since his highly publicised £24 million transfer from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

He has proven the difference between the two Manchester clubs and has helped United regain a strangle-hold on the Premier League crown. With a win against their bitter rivals on Monday, they will be 18 points ahead with only 21 available.

The signing was definitely an emphatic statement from the club in terms of their desire to reclaim the title they believe to be theirs, and no-one can argue it has been a success.
