Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has opened the summer transfer door for Liverpool.

The 24-year-old Belgian international, who can play either at centre back or right back, has been linked with both Manchester United and Everton in recent weeks.

And, The Daily Express reports that Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson had set his sights on the player as a possible long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford.

However, Alderweireld has verbally name-checked Liverpool in an interview with Belgian newspaper Het Nieuws Laatste, admitting the Anfield outfit ‘meet his criteria.

"I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria,” he said.

The Express goes on to report that the Godenzonen will want as much as £8million for the 23-cap international, who has featured 36 times in all competitions this season.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to be in the market for a defender this summer, with club legend Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season.

And, with Sebastian Coates yet to find his best form on Merseyside, the Reds could become over-reliant on Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel.

Alderweireld would provide stiff competition for the aforementioned duo, whilst also providing cover at full-back for Glen Johnson, who has missed large parts of Liverpool’s season through injury.
