Liverpool face a transfer battle with Marseille over £10million-rated Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel, according to reports.
The Daily Mirror claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers faces competition from the Ligue 1 outfit in pursuit of the 25-year-old winger, who has two caps for Spain.
Capel began his youth career at La Masia – Barcelona’s famed youth academy – but left to join Sevilla in 2001. Three-years later, he graduated to the senior side at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
But, in 2011, he moved to Portugal, signing for Sporting Lisbon in a €3.5million deal. Less than two years on, and with Sporting facing financial difficulties, manager Jesualdo Ferreira is set to lose one of his prized assets at the end of the season.
Liverpool are hoping to take advantage of the situation at the Estádio José Alvalade, but face competition from Marseille, who have also sensed an opportunity to land Capel.
The winger would fit nicely into Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation at Anfield, and also provide competition for a starting-place alongside the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Fabio Borini on Merseyside.
