Obviously the loss of Vincent Kompany to injury has been a blow, but Mancini seems to have forgotten that exactly the same thing happened to United last season when they lost captain Nemanja Vidic.
It could be said that City only won the title due to United's injuries last season. After only winning on goal difference there can be no doubt that the presence of Vidic all season would have won United at least one more point and subsequently the title.
Also forgotten is the fact that United started this season with Michael Carrick having to play centre-back, such was the depth of their injuries in that position.
City's main failing has been players not performing as well as they did last season. David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure have all fallen below last season's high standards (Monday night as an exception).
Whether it's a lack of motivation, having won the title last season, or the fact that other teams want to beat them more as champions, no-one can deny City have not been the same team.
Another fact is that Mancini does not seem to be able to resist tinkering with team selection and formations. Despite having an excellent defence last season, Joleon Lescott seems to have fallen down the pecking order and been replaced by Matija Nastasic.
Not that Nastasic isn't a player of great promise, but why try to fix what isn't broken? Mancini has also complained that teams are beaten before they play United, though with his all-star expensive line-up and title of reigning champions, why would United be any more feared than the current City squad?
With their huge funds and a pretty much bottomless pit of money, it should be easy for City to buy almost anyone they want.
Mancini moaned about not signing Robin van Persie but surely he should have had a back-up plan? City may well still win the FA Cup and save their season and perhaps Mancini's job too, but to blame everything and everyone but himself is just trying to deflect attention from his own failings.
