PSG defender: Barcelona star Lionel Messi is irreplaceable
Barcelona news: Lionel Messi irreplaceable, says PSG star Maxwell
Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell says Lionel Messi's injury provides the French club with a significant fillip before their clash with Barcelona on Wednesday evening, with the Brazilian claiming no player can replace the Camp Nou superstar.
Messi sustained a hamstring injury during the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week and, although he is in Barcelona's squad for the second encounter, faces a wait to find out if he will start at Catalonia.
Maxwell, a former teammate of Messi at Barcelona, says he takes no joy from seeing the Argentina injured, but admits it gives PSG a glimmer of hope heading into the second leg, with the tie poised at 2-2.
"Barcelona have a great squad but there is nobody that can substitute his level," Maxwell said, as reported by Goal.com.
"I am not happy if anyone is injured, but it is a fact that Messi is a player that cannot be replaced."
Messi scored the opening goal for Barcelona in Paris last Wednesday, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic restored parity for the home side despite more than a hint of offside.
Xavi allowed Barcelona to seize control of the tie again when he scored a late penalty, but Blaise Matuidi left it even later as he fired PSG back into contention before the decisive encounter at the Camp Nou.
