The likes of Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo are far more valuable than any goalkeeper purely because of their goalscoring exploits.
However, these goalkeepers would still command a hefty transfer fee should they move.
Here are the five most valuable goalkeepers according to Transfermarkt.
5. Rui Patricio | Sporting Lisbon | Value: £17.5m
The Portuguese number one has 22 caps for his country already at the age of 25. He has impressed with his club ever since making his debut in 2006, and became his club’s first choice in the next season. Since then he hasn’t looked back, and at such a young age for a ‘keeper his market value could yet increase.
4. Joe Hart | Manchester City | Value: £21m
The England and Manchester City shot-stopper has already emerged as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the world even if some of his blunders this season beg to differ, he would slot nicely into almost any team. With 30 caps already he could even break Peter Shilton’s record of 125 caps.
3. Petr Cech | Chelsea | Value: £22m
Chelsea’s number one for countless seasons now, his transfer fee of £7m back in 2002 was a bargain. After eleven years of loyal service, the Czech Republic international’s Chelsea career culminated with a heroic trophy winning performance in the final of the Champions League last May.
2. Manuel Neuer | Bayern Munich | Value: £26.5m
Bayern Munich’s giant is notoriously self-assured and his confident playing style translates into a fantastic goalkeeper. He is the second most expensive goalkeeper of all time after his £19m move to Bayern from Schalke in 2011, and has won over some initially sceptical fans to become an Allianz Arena favourite.
1. Iker Casillas | Real Madrid | Value: £31m
A Real Madrid icon and club captain for many years, Casillas was remarkably dropped by controversial manager José Mourinho, much to the outrage of the club's fans.
Nevertheless, the Spaniard has an astonishing 143 caps for Spain and, at 31, still has at least another four years in him. The winner of the IFFHS’s world’s best goalkeeper award for an unprecedented five years in a row, he a deserving winner.
