Manchester United are plotting a summer move for Raphael Varane, according to reports.

The Daily Star claims the Red Devils are watching the 19-year-old Real Madrid defender, having missed out on the player back in 2011 when he moved to the Spanish capital from Lens.

Now a first-team regular under Jose Mourinho, as well as a full international with France, Varane’s stock has dramatically risen whilst at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And, despite a £26million minimum fee release clause and a contract until June 2017, sources close to the player claim the interest from Manchester United is genuine.

The paper also reports that the transfer situation becomes further complicated by the teenager’s choice of agent, with Varane currently negotiating to join Jorge Mendes – the negotiator for both Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson got a first-hand look at Varane in the Champions League this season, with Manchester United falling to Los Blancos in the last 16 of the competition.

And, if the Scot does decide to pursue the centre back, it raises questions over the future of several players currently in the Red Devils squad – most notably Rio Ferdinand, according to the paper.

Ezequiel Garay is also being linked with a move to Old Trafford, the Star claims.
