Ex-Chelsea boss shuns Leeds United interest in favour of Bundesliga giants
Leeds close in on Brian McDermott after Roberto Di Matteo snub
Ex-Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is set to turn down a move to Championship side Leeds United in the hope that he can secure a bigger role elsewhere, with Schalke reportedly keen.
The Italian, who was sacked by Chelsea in November despite having won the Champions League in May, is believed to be the leading contender for the Bundesliga giants, who currently sit fourth, therefore retaining a slim hope of Champions League qualification.
It is believed they will offer Di Matteo, 42, a £1 million-per-year contract to entice him to Germany. His ability to speak German, in addition to his impressive European pedigree, are likely to work in his favour.
Di Matteo had also been linked with Championship strugglers Leeds United, but the lure of European football is thought to be enough to persuade him to turn down any approach by the Yorkshire side.
Following Di Matteo's snub, it's believed that the Elland Road giants have now turned their attentions to ex-Reading manager Brian McDermott as they prepare for a promotion push next season.
However, Di Matteo is by no means a certainty for the Schalke post, with David Moyes also rumoured to be interested as he continues to stall on signing a new Everton contract in pursuit of a fresh challenge.
