Christian Benteke is closing in on Aston Villa’s goal scoring record for a single Premier League campaign.

Aston Villa are having a very poor season and struggling for survival at the bottom of the table, but the only good thing that has come up for them this season is Christian Benteke.

The 22-year-old Belgian has been a goal machine this season and despite the fact that his team are 16th in the table, Benteke has been one of the best strikers in the English Premier League this term.

Aston Villa acquired Benteke's services for a fee around  £7 million and it has certainly proved to be a bargain as bigger clubs are now willing to pay big money for him.

Benteke has made 34 appearances for Villa this season and scored 19 goals along with eight assists. The Beligian has been praised by one and all and it looks like he may just be the man to break Aston Villa's 32-year-old record of most goals in a league season set by Peter Withe back in the 1980-81 season.

Benteke has already scored 15 goals in the league this season, just five behind Peter Withe's record of 20 goals - the last man to break the 20-goal barrier for Aston Villa in the English top flight.

With just six games remaining including tough fixtures against Manchester United and Chelsea it remains to seen whether Benteke can reach the milestone. He has however, given himself the perfect platform to help his team survive and write his name in history.

Benteke currently sits fifth on the goal scoring chart this season and has certainly shown that he has the potential to become one of the best strikers in the world and score even more goals in the years to come.
