England and Australia were both left deflated on Monday, albeit for different reasons, as the rain prevented Alastair Cook's side from chasing victory against New Zealand, and the Aussies lost to India in dramatic circumstances.

It may have been a psychologically damaging experience for Australia as India secured victory in the closing stages of the third Test, but Michael Clarke and his players would have learnt more about themselves in defeat than England did in a wet Wellington.

England have yet to get going in earnest in 2013, having drawn their solitary completed Test match, and have just one further match to tune themselves before the start of an eagerly awaited Ashes summer.

There have, however, been plenty of positives for England to take from their tour of New Zealand so far, with Nick Compton proving he has both the mentality and talent to be Test match opener, and Stuart Broad able to lead the bowling attack when required.

Matt Prior further enhanced his credentials as arguably the best wicket-keeper batsman in world cricket with a classically swashbuckling knock in Wellington, while captain Cook and the metronomic Jonathan Trott have also been able to contribute important centuries.

Having imposed the follow on against the Black Caps in the second Test, England have the opportunity to strike a decisive blow in the series in Auckland next week while, at the same time, Australia will scrap to save face in the final match of the series against India.

Australian cricket's reputation has been tarnished once again during the time on the sub-continent following a breach of team discipline by some of their most senior players, and how England would love their demise to continue in the Ashes later this year.

With the Ashes now less than four months away, this is the situation as we have it in terms of the respective leading wicket takers and run scorers for England and Australia this year…
