Liverpool face competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign Danish international playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Sporten.dk claims the Ajax starlet could command a transfer fee in the region of £17million, and that Magpies chief Alan Pardew is ready to ‘step up’ his interest in the player.

Eriksen’s contract at the Amsterdam Arena expires in the summer of 2014, and a number of clubs have been linked with moves for the player in the past.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is one of those also thought to be interested in the 21-year-old, who is close to lifting his third Eredivisie title with the Godenzonen this season.

And, were the Reds able to lure Erikson to Anfield, he’d join compatriot Daniel Agger on Merseyside.

Liverpool also have fairly recent history when it comes to doing business with Ajax, signing Luis Suarez from the Dutch giants in January 2011.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are looking to build a team for the future under Alan Pardew, who was handed an eight-year contract for his efforts last term.

However, their adventures in Europe have taken a toll on the Premier League campaign, with a thin squad leaving the Toon to fight against relegation at St. James’ Park.

Eriksen would certainly add an extra piece of quality to the Newcastle United midfield if they could bring the player to Tyneside, but competition will certainly be fierce for the signature.
