Brian McDermott is close to becoming the new Leeds United manager, just a month after being sacked as Reading boss.

A statement released yesterday by Leeds confirmed that talks are underway with a candidate, and that Neil Redfearn will remain as caretaker until the new manager is appointed.

Although Leeds have not named the person they are negotiating with, McDermott has been heavily linked to the post since his and Neil Warnock's departures from their respective clubs.

"The process of appointing a permanent replacement for Neil Warnock has progressed significantly this week and when all matters are finalised, we will be in a position to make a formal announcement", the Yorkshire club announced.

Leeds parted company with Warnock at the beginning of the month after a play-off place became impossible and a relegation battle loomed.

Warnock's assistants, Mick Jones and Ronny Jepson, also left, leaving the door open for McDermott to bring in his own staff if appointed at Elland Road.

Leeds are currently 17th in the Championship having seen their form deteriorate over the course of the season and now it seems the club want a permanent successor who has experience of building a team for promotion.

Sheffield Wednesday are Leeds' opponents this weekend in a crucial Yorkshire derby and with just five games to go, McDermott's appointment could not come sooner.

It has been suggested that the ex-Reading boss will be installed before the weekend's game.
