An own goal is humiliating for the player who scores it, but they can be very funny for those watching.
Here are five of the most outrageous own goals ever scored:
5. Carl Jenkinson v Cologne
Less than a month into his Arsenal career, young full-back Carl Jenkinson tried to clear an awkward ball forward, but inadvertently turned the ball high over his goalkeeper and into the net. It was the last act of the first half and the visibly distraught youngster was hauled off at half time.

4. Franck Queudrue v Bastia
Similar to Jenkinson’s gaffe, the former Birmingham left-back who was paying for Lens at the time smashed the ball as high as he could, and although the goalkeeper could have perhaps done better, the volley landed perfectly on the line before bouncing into the net.

3. Jamie Pollock v QPR
This own-goal is reminiscent of Matt Le Tissier’s goal against Newcastle many moons ago - the only difference was this one was at the wrong end! After beating a defender he lobbed the ball perfectly into the net. Pick that one out!

2. Festus Baise v Sun Hei
No one had heard of the Nigerian until this strike in the Hong Kong league in 2011. This truly is an extraordinary goal: Baise “scorpion kicks” a low cross into the corner of goal. This defender is now a worldwide internet star!

1. Chris Brass v Darlington
When watching this own goal it is hard to know whether to laugh or cry. Brass was the subject of an unfortunate “double-whammy” as he smacked the ball into his face before it rebounded into his own net in humiliating fashion.
