The Badminton World Federation have announced their nominations for the 2012 Player Awards, and unsurprisingly it’s packed with success stories from the Olympic Games in London.
Chinese superstar Lin Dan, who won his second gold last summer and is the former world number one, faces great rival and two-time silver medallist Lee Ching Wei (Malaysia) in the men’s category.
BWF World Superseries Finals winner Chen Long, who claimed bronze for China at the Olympics, is also in the mix, whilst doubles pairings Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng (China) and Lee Yong Dae/Chung Jae Sung (Korea) complete the list. Jae Sung has since retired from the sport after claiming bronze at the 2012 games.
In the women’s category, it’s a similar story, as Olympic champion and world number one Li Xuerui heads the shortlist. Compatriot and silver medallist Wang Yihan, Indian bronze medallist Saina Nehwal and doubles pair Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei (China) complete the list.
Should a doubles pair scoop the prize, then the players will share the annual award.
The BWF will announce the winners of the awards, as well as the ‘Most Promising Player of the Year’, at a gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, 18th May.
