Andrey Arshavin set for Arsenal exit

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed to the club's official website that Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin will leave the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Arshavin, who will not be offered a new deal when his contract expires in June, has made just two starts for The Gunners this season - both in the Capital One Cup - and has appeared in the Premier League seven times, all from the substitutes bench.

"His contract ends at the end of the season and then he will decide what to do. I don't think he will stay here because he doesn't play enough", confirmed Wenger at his press conference ahead of this weekend's visit of Norwich City.

Reports in the Evening Standard earlier this week had suggested that Arshavin was considering retirement aged just 32, having supposedly lost his appetite for the game, but Wenger has refuted doubts over the midfielder's commitment.

Despite the manager's praise, it has undoubtedly been a disappointing decline for Arshavin; once hailed as one of the Premier League's finest talents upon his arrival in north London in January 2009, Arsenal fans will no doubt look back on his career in red and white with a forlorn sense of what might have been.
