France were provided with a relatively easy passage from their group in 1998, overcoming the Said Arabia and South Africa comfortable, and securing a path into the knockout phase alongside Demark.

Aime Jacquet's side were only able to muster three goals on their way to the final, beating Paraguay, Italy and Croatia in the process, earning a place in the final against a Ronaldo inspired Brazil.

But France, led by Didier Deschamps, marshalled by Marcel Desailly, and conducted by Zinedine Zidane cruised to a deserved victory, and deliver a first World Cup as they heralded a golden generation for French football.
