Arsenal ready to return for French midfielder after deadline day rejection
Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger set to renew interest in Etienne Capoue
Arsenal are reportedly prepared to renew their interest in Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue this summer, having failed in a bid to bring the Frenchman to the Emirates Stadium on transfer deadline day in January.
According to the Daily Express, the Gunners had an offer for the 24-year-old rebuffed by his employers during the winter transfer window, but are ready to return for the France international come July.
Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers had also been in the market to sign Capoue in January, according to the player's agent, but Arsenal would appear to be making the early running to snatch the player in the summer.
Arsenal could reportedly be signed for around €12 million, and is being considered by Arsene Wenger as a replacement for Alex Song, who left north London for Barcelona last year.
Mikel Arteta has been tasked with anchoring the Arsenal midfield this season, but Capoue could be recruited to ensure the Gunners have a more naturally defensive player to protect their back four.
Capoue could provide Wenger with some added steel in central midfield, which has been hit by another long-term injury to Abou Diaby, while his acquisition could free up Arteta for a more advanced role.
He has made five appearances for France, the first of which came last August, and scored his only goal for the national team in a 3-1 World Cup qualification win over Belarus.
