Football is a sport where fierce battles have taken place not just on the pitch, but off it too.
So let's have a look at the top five rivalries in the football-crazy state of England, where football is more than just a game.
Arsenal v Tottenham (North London derby)
Arsenal, who have struggled to gain recent success, have been in serious competition with north London rivals Tottenham. History clearly shows that Arsenal have been on top but recent form, considering the recent past, shows Tottenham have a promising future in English football.
In 174 matches between them, 73 have gone in favour of the Gunners while 54 have gone towards Spurs and 47 were settled to a draw. The most recent match was played at the White Hart Lane where Tottenham won 2-1.
Aston Villa v Birmingham City (Second City derby)
It is called the 'Second City derby' because Birmingham is the second biggest city in England. The relegation of Birmingham City has given Aston Villa fans something to boast about to their rivals, but the matches in the past have been one of the most fiercely fought battles in English football history.
Out of 117 matches played between the two, Aston Villa have come out on top in 51 of them where Birmingham has managed to 37 wins where 29 of them have ended in a draw.
Liverpool v Everton (Merseyside derby)
This is one of the biggest rivalries in the Premier League. The recent success and development of the Evertonians means the gap has been closed between their hugely successful neighbours and themselves.
From a total of 219 matches between them, Liverpool have won 88 games and Everton have won 66, with 65 games finishing all square.
Manchester United vs Manchester City (Manchester derby)
Manchester City, perhaps one of the most most developing sides in world football, have shown Manchester United recently that they have got some new competitors for the crown of best team in England.
The 6-1 win by City last season and the Premier League title they snatched from United which left the Red Devils and their rans shocked has really put some pressure on United. The most recent match took place at Old Trafford earlier this month, when City recorded a 2-1 victory thanks to Sergio Aguero's late winner.
In 165 matches played between them, City have clinched victory in 46 matches while United were dominant in 69 and 50 resulted in a draw.
Manchester United v Liverpool
One of oldest rivalries in world football. Manchester United got the better of Liverpool in their last three fixtures in the Premier League, winning all of them 2-1, but Liverpool eliminated them from the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory in the fourth Round last year.
In the 187 matches played between the two sides, Manchester United beat Liverpool on 74 occasions, while Liverpool came out on top 62 times. The other 51 matches ended in a draw.
They have always had their differences between them, and there are few rivalries fiercer in world football.
