Tommy Robredo claimed his 11th ATP Tour title with a hard-fought victory over serving giant, Kevin Anderson.
The Spaniard won in three sets, 7-6 (8/6) 4-6 6-3, and had to save four break points in the decisive set before coming out on top after two hours and 19 minutes on court.
Both Robredo and Anderson were in good form during the tie, but it was the former who produced some stunning shots when it mattered most, saving all four breakpoints he faced during the game.
Anderson was playing his first ever ATP Tour final on clay and for the second time this year, he had to settle for a runners-up spot after losing another three set match to Bernard Tomic in the ATP Sydney final.
Speaking to the ATP Tour's official website following the victory, Robredo said: "I have been practising very well during a month in Barcelona before coming here.
"I knew that I could play a good tournament here and you never know what can happen. I went match by match and kept winning.
"Today, I was pretty nervous since this is very important for me. I really wanted to win this."
On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, big serving John Isner got the better of favourite Nicolas Almagro from Spain. Isner won in straight sets 6-3 7-5 and played his best game of 2013.
Isner, who has had major trouble getting the results he so desperately desires this year, almost had tears in his eyes after closing the match out.
Even though Almagro went into the game as a huge favourite, once again everyone was reminded of how good Isner can play in front of his home crowd. Five of Isner’s six triumphs have come in the US - a remarkable feat.
