Speculation ceases to disappear as Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo remains linked with a return to his former club, Manchester United. However just how can the Red Devils afford to pull this spectacular deal off?

Ronaldo left drizzly Manchester for sunny Spain in the summer of 2009, shortly after failing to help his side retain the UEFA Champions League crown in Rome where they were defeated 2-0 by FC Barcelona.

Despite the Red Devils managing to make it to the final once again in May 2011, they have lacked the ruthless and rampant edge to their attacking play that they once had, before the Portuguese captain had moved on in a record breaking deal worth £80 million.

However Ronaldo's love and admiration for his former club and teammates was vividly illustrated in both legs of their UEFA Champions League tie in the round of 16, especially at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ronaldo refused to participate in any of the celebrations for his two goals which were pivotal in eventually knocking out the Premier League leaders and ending their European ambitions for this season. The Real Madrid man also spent time in the United dressing room after the game, catching up with his old teammates and when asked if he would one day play in the red of Manchester United again, he did not explicitly deny the future possibility.

Do United have the funds available to complete the transfer? The short answer would be no, however according to Daily Mail, it is understood that United officials discussed a deal to bring Ronaldo back at a meeting with kit manufacturers, Nike.

It was discussed that the use of advertising and shirt sales would supply Ronaldo with wages to match the unthinkable money he earns at Real. In order to complete the transfer, Manchester United would have to acquire around the same sum they received for the superstar back in 2009.

It is speculated that Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to spend £60 million plus send Ronaldo's national teammate Nani in the opposite direction.

The Mirror have quoted Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic as saying he wouldn't be surprised if Cristiano Ronaldo made a summer move from Real Madrid back to the Old Trafford club ahead of next season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's time in management is slowly running out and it is clear that he is desperate for his side to be champions of Europe for at least one last time in his career; and the addition of one of the best footballers in the world alongside players such as Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney would greatly enhance the chance of the trophy returning to Old Trafford.
