With rivals Manchester City expected to spend big again this summer, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be sure to browse the transfer market for big signings of his own.
Which five players would be the most beneficial for the Red Devils in preparation for next season?
Sven Bender | Borussia Dortmund
One position that United seem to lack is a strong presence in the holding midfield role. Michael Carrick has been fantastic as a deep-lying playmaker but United have no players to act as ball winners in front of the defence.
At just over six foot, and being known for his strength, heading and defensive abilities, Sven Bender could be the perfect addition to a strong United team that seems to only be lacking someone that can play as an anchorman.
Marouane Fellaini | Everton
Marouane Fellaini is more of a flexible central midfielder who can play anywhere from defensive through to attacking midfield.
Depending on United's style, Fellaini could be a good addition to play either behind Carrick - as Bender would - or just in front of Carrick as more of an attacking midfielder behind the strikers.
Fellaini is very strong in the air and has good playmaking abilities. This could make him a perfect midfield partner for Carrick or sit well behind Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley or Wayne Rooney.
Danilo | FC Porto
Rafael Da Silva has been in inspiring form all season for the Red Devils. He's been strong in defence and arguably even better going forward, adding a goals to his game.
However, if Rafael gets injured, United have very few natural right-backs to replace him. Possibilities include Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who have been playing as centre-halves, and Antonio Valencia who is much more of a winger.
Danilo could, therefore, be very useful for United as he is just 21 years old and already a regular for FC Porto.
James Rodriguez | FC Porto
With Nani set to leave United in the summer, a spot as a winger has opened up. Players such as Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have been very inconsistent this season and new signing Wilfried Zaha is yet to show his worth in the Premier League.
A new winger could be beneficial for United, and Rodriguez is a very hot prospect right now with many clubs interested in the young Colombian.
Mats Hummels | Borussia Dortmund
Rio Ferdinand has already retired from international football and is still yet to sign a new contract with the Red Devils. Nemanja Vidic has recently returned from long-term injury and, apart from him, there don't seem to be any established centre-backs at United.
Smalling and Jones are possibilities but they are still very inexperienced. One more centre-back around the age of 24 could be useful for United and Mats Hummels seems to tick all the boxes.
He is composed in defence and comfortable on the ball. He has good playmaking abilities as a centre-half and is strong in the air. Hummels may be an expensive signing but could be worth the money if he made the move to Old Trafford.
