Lukas Podolski was one of the bargain signings last summer for Arsenal. He was an exciting addition to the club and has certainly lived up to the high expectations set by the fans this season.
Hitting double figures in goals and assists this German star has been one of the best at Arsenal stars this season. However, in recent games, we have seen him left on the side-lines.
For the last two months, Podolski has struggled to get time on the pitch. However, the bench isn't the right place for a player of his calibre. He has scored some cracking goals this season, and is a fans favourite.
So why is Arsene Wenger leaving such a player out of the side? It could be due to lack of energy, it could be down to fitness levels, but he wasn’t left on the bench at his previous clubs as much as this.
Arsene may have his reasons as to why he hasn’t been in the starting line-up for a while, but it seems as if the club would benefit more with him part of the action.
Last weekend's result against Norwich couldn’t have been the result it was without Podolski on the pitch. Maybe if the player was used from the start, Arsenal could have put the game to bed a lot sooner. He has a wicked strike and has an eye for a goal, so it seems a little wasteful to see such a player stranded on the bench.
The fans have also seen the likes of Szczesny and Vermaelen on the bench too. This has been down to their morale, and the club has benefited from the run of form of Mertesacker and Fabianksi. However, if these players start to dip in form like their team-mates, Arsenal may see their top talents out of the side.
As it stands, Arsenal are on target for a top four finish this season, but surely Arsenal could achieve more if they gave Podolski more playing time.
His goal against Norwich may be enough to get him back where he belongs. More time simply leads to more goals, for a player who has already scored plenty this season. It makes sense that the club use the player to his full potential, before he is forced to draw a line with the club.
