Peter Crouch might be very tall but, believe it or not, there are even bigger giants out there in the world of football.

This article looks at the tallest footballers in the world - not including goalkeepers.

Height can be a very desirable trait for a footballer depending on a team's style. Tall players can be effective as target-men when building attacks quickly and as strong, defensive players to deal with high balls in the box.

They can also be effective when defending or attacking corners and free-kicks and sometimes act as a strong presence in midfield.

Whatever the task for them, tall footballers bring strength to a team and strike fear into their opponents as they have a physical advantage on high balls.

Here are the five tallest footballers in the world today:

Yang Changpeng | Height: 6ft 8.5in

Yang Changpeng is a Chinese striker who currently plays for Shenzhen Fengpeng FC in the second tier of Chinese football. In 2006, he had a one month trial at Bolton Wanderers where he was dubbed 'The Chinese Peter Crouch' by the British media.

Tor Hogne Aaroy | Height: 6ft 8.5in

Tor Hogne Aaroy plays as a forward for Aalesund in the Norwegian first division. He is 36 years old and played 242 games for Aalesund from 2001 to 2011, scoring 90 goals. He then spent a year at JEF United before returning to Aalesund this season.

Lacina Traoré | Height: 6ft 8in

Lacina Traoré is just 22 years old but is already 6ft 8in tall. The Ivorian striker plays for Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian Premier League and joined for an undisclosed fee - believed to be over £15m. He has scored 59 goals in 160 games as a career total, including a goal for Anzhi against Liverpool in their 1-0 win last November.

Oyvind Hoas | Height: 6ft 8in

Oyvind Hoas is also a Norwegian striker and plays for Sarpsborg 08 in the Tippeligaen. Currently in his tenth year as a professional footballer, he has a career total of 64 goals in 210 appearances. During the summer before the 07/08 season, Hoas trained with Luton Town, who were then a League One side. He came close to signing for the club, but a transfer never materialised.

Nikola Zigic | Height: 6ft 7.5in

Nikola Zigic plays for Birmingham City in the Championship. He joined Birmingham from Valencia in May 2010 and plays as a centre-forward for the club. He has 25 goals in 91 games for Birmingham, including the opening goal in the 2011 Carling Cup Final in which Birmingham beat favourites Arsenal 2-1.
