Jack Wilshere had to be held back from a half-time scuffle with Kevin Mirallas during Arsenal's encounter with Everton on Tuesday, after the Belgian forward appeared to squirt water in the face of the young Gunner.

Mirallas and Wilshere clashed as they trudged off towards the tunnel at the Emirates Stadium, with the Everton star splashing the Arsenal midfielder - inadvertently or not - and the former taking exception.

Wilshere grabbed Mirallas around the neck before some of the latter's Everton teammates piled in do diffuse the situation, although the Arsenal youngster was clearly fired up by the incident.

It had been a bruising affair between the two Champions League hopefuls, which finished 0-0, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger accused Everton of going 'over the edge' with their physicality.

"They (Everton) decided to make it very physical for us to disturb our game and sometimes went over the edge, but the referee had to make the right decisions," stated Wenger after the game.

"If (a tunnel bust-up) was on TV, very soon everybody will know about it.

"I don't blame the referee and I do not want to comment on every decision of the referee. Despite all that, we had the chances to win the game."

Arsenal's failure to beat Everton meant they missed the opportunity to reinforce their position in third place in the Premier League and open a four point gap over Chelsea and Tottenham.

The Gunners are two points above both of their London rivals, having played one game more than Spurs and two more than Chelsea.
