With the Premier League all but won by Manchester United, there is only really one award that is undecided and will go down to the wire.

The race for the Golden Boot has certainly opened up with Robin van Persie getting his name back on the scoresheet after a 10-game dry spell. Will he catch Liverpool’s Luis Suarez to claim the prize for the second successive season, or will it be someone else?

In the running for this year’s prize are two real contenders and a further three outsiders. Here's a breakdown of those vying for this prestigious honour.

Luis Suarez: Liverpool | 22 goals

Already on 22 goals in the league and not showing many signs of stopping, Suarez looks like the potential winner. Liverpool have a tough run-in with games against Newcastle, Fulham and Chelsea, not to mention a Merseyside derby. Could this tough run-in cost him the prize of the league’s top scorer?

Robin van Persie: Manchester United | 20 goals

Notching up his 20th goal against West Ham with six games remaining is pretty good by anyone’s standards, but factor in he is just coming off the back of a 10-game dry spell, and it's all the more impressive. Has the flying Dutchman left it too late, with United still to face Arsenal and Chelsea? Or will the prospect of a league winners medal be the motivation required to win the Golden Boot two years running?

Gareth Bale: Tottenham Hotspur | 17 goals

Bale has been in scintillating form for Spurs this year and has lead their charge for a Champions League spot. Sitting on 17 goals means he only really has an outside chance of taking the prize, but the prospect of European football could be all that’s needed to close the gap on the two players ahead of him.

Michu: Swansea City | 17 goals

Already finding the net 17 times in his debut season is a fantastic return for £2 million. Many argue there is no value in the transfer market but Michu has shown that if you look hard enough there are some real bargains to be had. Can he add to his tally and secure an astonishing return and claim the Golden Boot? It seems possible - Swansea have already surprised many this season, and Michu could be the player to perform another shock.

Demba Ba: Chelsea | 15 goals

With 15 goals to his name this season and a big money move from Newcastle to Chelsea, Ba certainly is a contender for this season’s Golden Boot award. It seems that the move to Stamford Bridge has stifled his scoring run somewhat with his playing time more restricted due to Rafa Benitez's rotation policy. Had he stayed at Newcastle, would he have been celebrating a Golden Boot?

There are just six games remaining and it looks certain to be a head-to-head between Suarez and Van Persie. My money is on RVP to take it for the second consecutive season, the thrill of winning the league and the buzz of scoring again will be all the motivation needed to bypass Suarez for the crown.
