Six years ago today: Lionel Messi emulates Diego Maradona solo goal

Published 13 Comments

Six years ago today Lionel Messi gave the biggest in his young career that he had the potential to become one of the world’s greatest by emulating his legendary compatriot, Diego Maradona.

It was in a Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Getafe at Camp Nou and Xavi had given Barcelona a lead inside 20 minutes.

Messi was being tipped for big things by most that had watched the 19-year-old, but Barça’s second goal would bring the comparisons and predictions to a whole new level.

Diego Maradona is considered by many as the greatest ever and Messi pulled off an almost exact replica of the famous World Cup 1986 goal v England.

Just before half hour Messi picked up the ball in his own half after a pass from Xavi, wriggled away from the first challenge and proceeded to skip past another five challenges, including the keeper, and finishing brilliantly from a tight angle.

Those heralding the coming of a new great after the goal have now been vindicated with the little Argentine breaking all kinds of records.
