La Liga round-up: Valencia suffer setback in fight for fourth
Real Sociedad win to go four points clear as race for last Champions League spot heats up
This week’s La Liga fixtures saw some thrilling results throughout the Primera Division, including a Seville derby and an Atletico hammering.
The featured match is the Seville derby. Having gotten married just last Wednesday, Ivan Rakitic was definitely up for it converting two quick fire goals before Alvaro Negredo slotted his 18th of the season to make it 3-0 with time to spare.
Dorlan Pabon found his way through the Sevilla defence to the delight of the home crowd as he pulled one back for Real Betis to give the stripes a chance.
Sevilla looked dominant from then on until Federico Fazio shoved the oncoming Pabon in the penalty area to gift away a penalty, which In-form striker Ruben Castro was never going to miss, putting away his 16th of the season.
The last thing Sevilla needed was to go down to 10 but a second bookable offence meant Medel was to be dismissed yet again, not his first red this season. Betis then completed their remarkable comeback to draw the game 3-3 from another piece of skill from Pabon.
Elsewhere, two Imanol Agirretxe goals ensured a comfortable win for in form Real Sociedad against a troubled Rayo side who have lost three in four now. Sociedad, who go four points clear in fourth spot ahead of Malaga and Valencia, will look to continue their good form and surge for Champions League football.
Malaga had a bit of a trickier run in following their heartbreak in Dortmund mid week. A stoppage time winner from Julio Baptista ensure all three points for Malaga who currently occupy fifth but are banned from Europe next year so a top four spot bares little meaning.
Valencia were involved in a cracking 3-3 bust up with Espanyol who under Javier Aguirre have lifted from the bottom of the table to 11th, two stoppage time goals ensuring this was going to end all square.
Deportivo have gained momentum in recent times winning three of their last five to move out of the relegation zone thrashing Levante 4-0 with goals from Benfica loanee Nelson Oliviera and Pizzi who have shone in the darkest times for Depor.
Atletico had possibly the easiest match of the weekend against Granada who are plummeting to relegation surely after two back to back 5-0 thrashings. Radamel Falcao regaining his goal touch with two easy tap-ins and Diego Costa putting in his shift.
Barcelona may have pitched up with a second string side resting key players for the Zaragoza match but this one was far too easy, goals from Tello and Thiago ensured a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Real Madrid faced Athletic Club who were playing the last of their games in the San Mames. It was an encouraging 3-0 win with the star being Cristiano Ronaldo, as usual who snatched two.
