Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a surprise summer move for ex-Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, reports the Sunday Mirror.

The 25-year-old Cameroon international swapped north London for Barcelona last August, but having failed to establish himself in La Liga has already been linked with a swift exit.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is said to be monitoring Song's situation at Camp Nou, and is ready to offer him a return to the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger has advised his former charge to remain in Span for another season, but that hasn't halted speculation he could come back to the Emirates Stadium, less than 12 months after leaving the Gunners in a £16million deal.

Despite Song's old Arsenal ties, it's Tottenham who are believed to be seriously considering an offer for him, though they will need to qualify for the Champions League this season, if they are to have any chance of securing the midfield enforcer's signature.

Suggestions that Arsenal had a buy-back clause written into the agreement that saw Song follow Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona were denied by Wenger earlier in the week, meaning that Tottenham could have a clear shot at trying to lure him to White Hart Lane.

Song has started only 16 games for Tito Vilanova's side this season - with several of those appearances coming in an unfamiliar central defensive role - though, he did feature from the start in Barcelona's 1-0 win over Levante on Saturday evening.
