Former Brazil international Ronaldo believes that Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is a little bit better than rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The now-retired legend that played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid is of the opinion that Los Blancos forward Cristiano Ronaldo would have been the best player in the world in any other era but has the misfortune of vying against Messi for the status of football’s top player.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner is a huge fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has managed 50 goals already this season and is currently the Champions League top scorer with 11 goals this season. Since arriving at Madrid, Ronaldo has maintained an average of a goal a game with an astonishing 196 in 193 games since his world-record transfer.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a former winner himself after a successful league and cup double with United but has failed to win the prestigious award since making the move to Spain. Lionel Messi has won it four times in a row and World Cup-winner Ronaldo can understand why.

Messi broke Muller’s record of the most goals in a calendar year with an impressive 91 goals in all competition, although Ronaldo will be aiming to break the record after an impressive start to 2013 in which he has guided his team to a cup final and a Champions League semi-final tie against Borussia Dortmund

"I would say Messi [is the world's best player] because he is a little bit better than Cristiano," the 36-year-old told Tuttosport."But I would also add that Cristiano has had unbelievably bad luck. He would have been the best player in the world in many other eras, but he has coincided with another of the game's greats.

Although, Messi has dominated the FIFA awards in the last few years there is still debate as to who the best player in the world is. One thing is for sure, we are experiencing football’s greatest rivalry in the same generation.
