Raphael Varane has thanked manager Jose Mourinho for his show of confidence in him and helping his development at Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old was also looking ahead to Real's UEFA Champions League semi final tie with Bourssia Dortmund this week.

The former Lens player has gained plaudits around the world for numerous world-class performances since he broke into Mourinho’s first team in only his second season with Madrid.

The French international has been hailed as the next big thing in football and he believes his progress is all down to the guidance of the Portuguese manager.

Fabregas told AS:  "I have to thank him - my coach - for the confidence he has given to me and his help in improving me as a player.

"I have worked hard to get to where I am. I have since learned a lot from my teammates.

He also looked ahead to Madrid’s Champions League tie against the German giant with the first leg on Wednesday at the Signal Iduna Park. He warned his teammates against complacency.

"Dortmund are a team that can change from defence to attack rapidly - they love to attack like that. That is their style of play.

"They are a great team and they have not made it to the semi-finals by luck alone.”

Madrid will be looking to end their poor run of form on German soil after already succumbing to a 2-1 defeat to Dortmund in the group stages of the competition.

They also missed out on a chance of last season’s final after failing to overcome another German side last season, losing on penalties to Bayern Munich.

However Varane has been instrumental in Madrid’s revival after a poor start to the season with impressive displays especially against rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

The Frenchman was a rock at the back as Madrid knocked out Barcelona in the semi-finals - he even managed to get on the score sheet twice.

The talented defender will be hoping to help inspire his team again for a place in Wembley in their pursuit of their 10th European title.
