Marouane Fellaini has insisted Everton will continue fighting for the remainder of the season, following their disappointing result against Sunderland at the weekend.

The Toffees saw their Champions League aspirations dented at the Stadium of Light, where they lost 1-0 through Stephane Sessegnon.

Europa League qualification now looks a more realistic aim, but the Belgian midfielder is seeking maximum points from the remaining games of the season.

“We have four more games and we must keep going and try to win,” he told the official Everton website.

“It’s difficult now but if we try, we will see at the end of the season.”

The Blues underperformed in Weirside and Fellaini believes Paolo Di Canio’s recent arrival at Sunderland galvanised the Black Cats.

“Sunderland were playing at home, for a new manager in his first game here,” he said. “They had a lot of energy today.”

“It was disappointing for the team and the staff. There weren’t a lot of chances today.”

That result was a massive blow for Everton and leaves them five points behind Spurs – who occupy fifth-place in the Premier League table.

David Moyes’ side face Fulham at the weekend, in a match which is now a must-win for the hosts in their quest for Europe.

Fellaini – who was deployed in a more defensive position against Sunderland – is under no illusions about the task in hand.

“We have four big games – two at home and two away,” he said. “We will try to win those two at home and we will see where we are after Liverpool and Chelsea.”
