In such hard financial times it is no surprise clubs often dip into the free agent market as a way of recruiting new talent. So in response we have listed five top targets who could be free agents in the summer.
5. Claudio Pizarro | Bayern Munich
Well adapted to the Bundesliga after 12 successful years, the Peru international is entering the twilight of his career, however he is a player that certainly suggests that age is just a number after a relatively successful season at Bavarian giants Bayern Munich. With experience in the Premier League after a two-year stint with Chelsea, Pizarro has been a proven goal scorer in the English game. A potential good signing for a promoted or mid-table side.
4. Manuel Iturra | Malaga
After a solid season with the Spanish Champions League quarter-finalists Malaga, Iturra has been linked with many a move across Europe, in particular Liverpool.
Strong, combative central midfielder, he would prove a class coup for any side hoping to protect their back four with some quality. If he does move to the Premier League expect to see him playing for a side in European contention, he would prove very valuable with his European experience this season.
3. Fernando Amorebieta | Athletic Bilbao
'The Butcher of Bilbao' as he has been nicknamed by the fans of the Basque club Athletic Bilbao. The key to the Europa League run to the final last season, playing an integral part of a solid back four bullying the oppositions strikers.
Linked with quite a few moves this summer, Amorebieta has expressed his desire to move on amid strong rumours with him having held talks with Arsenal. It has been reported that he has signed a contract with Fulham but this is yet to be confirmed by either club. Definitely a mover before the start of the 2013-14 season and a great signing for any team.
2. Modibo Diakite | Lazio
The 6ft 4in centre-back from France is an acclaimed and much coveted player for Lazio playing in Serie A. Strong, quick and very good in the air, great qualities for any defender in the Premier League. With reports going on about Liverpool's interest in the 26-year-old centre-back, it appears Norwich have won the race for his signature. A very talented player who would fit into almost any side; a bargain!
1. Frank Lampard | Chelsea
Frank Lampard is a constant discussion point for all fans. Why are Chelsea letting him go? With him set to break the club's all time scoring record - beating Bobby Tambling on 202 goals - Lampard is one of the greats to grace the English game.
It is remarkable how year in year out he manages as a midfielder to score 10 plus goals. With strong interest from around the globe, I would not be surprised to see him follow in David Beckham's footsteps and turn out for the MLS side L.A Galaxy. If Chelsea choose not to offer Lampard a new contract, expect his agent to be very busy this summer.
