They have been named as champions-elect time and time again but haven’t been able to cross the finish line since 2001 - but this could Bayern Munich’s year.

With the Bundesliga wrapped up in record time after losing it for the past two years to Borussia Dortmund, the Bavarians are right back where they belong: on top.

Bayern Munich have been sweeping away all opposition that comes their way in the Bundesliga this season and have only suffered one loss this season -to Bayer Leverkusen. They have been destroying records as they marched towards their record 23rd Bundesliga title, winning it with six games left, which is a record in itself.

This blistering form has carried on into the Champions League as well. Jupp Heynckes' men had a slightly shaky start after losing to BATE Borisov in their second match of the group stages but recovered and cruised through to the round of 16, including a 6-1 decimation of Lille.

Bayern scraped though to the quarter-finals after winning on away goals against Arsenal. Juventus was the next challenge and they were clinically dispatched with a 2-0 win in both the home and away fixtures.

The Bavarians are set to face their biggest challenge yet as they get ready to face Barcelona in the semi-finals.

Bayern have been in two of the last three Champions League finals and look even better than they were last year, but a match against Barcelona is always going to be testing.

Bayern haven’t shown any weaknesses this season but they have seemed complacent on a couple of occasions, which was seen against Arsenal and in the final against Chelsea in last season’s final, the latter of which cost them the glory of adding a fifth Champions League trophy to their collection.

Barcelona, with or without defensive issues, are a team to fear and Bayern, even with their amazing form, should wary about that.

The way Bayern have played all season they seem like they are on mission, and this week we will see them face their biggest test yet.
