Angel Rangel has insisted that Swansea City are still on course to break the 50-point barrier with five Premier League games remaining this season.
The Spanish right-back – who has played over 200 games for the club since 2007 – reflected on what has been another successful season for the Welsh outfit in the top flight.
He told the official Swansea website: “We can still reach 50 points. We have three very tough games, but we also play Wigan and Fulham as well which will be important matches for us.”
The Swans held in-form Southampton to a goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, and whilst Rangel felt his side had the better of the opportunities, he was happy with a point.
Rangel added: “I think we edged it in terms of chances, and we did well in the early stages.
“But we didn’t get that first goal and that gives you the relaxation to play the rest of the game. However, it is another point and we’ll see what happens in the next five games.”
The Capital One Cup winners currently have 42 points and sit in ninth place, with a top half finish looking increasing likely.
Most would argue that they have already had a very successful season, but reaching Michael Laudrup’s target would be the icing on the cake for Rangel and the team.
Swansea face Capital One Cup semi-final opponents Chelsea on Sunday, in what Rangel anticipates will be a difficult clash.
he said"It’s going to be a tough game,” . “I think it would have been important to beat Southampton, particularly at home, because we now have two tough games against Chelsea and Manchester City.”
“We’ll go game by game and I think 50 points is still within our reach.”
