Borussia Dortmund confirm Mario Gotze transfer to Bayern Munich
Arsenal and Manchester United transfer news: Bayern Munich agree deal for Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze
German midfielder Mario Gotze, linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, will join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window after his release clause was activated, Borussia Dortmund have confirmed.
Gotze has established himself as one of the most promising young talents in European football since breaking into the BVB first-team in 2009, leading to links with some of the most prominent clubs on the continent.
Arsenal and Manchester United have both been touted as potential destinations for the 20-year-old, but it emerged on Monday night that Gotze would be heading to the Allianz Arena this summer rather than the Emirates Stadium or Old Trafford.
German newspaper Bild claimed the exclusive on the story, stating that Bayern Munich had agreed to match Gotze's buyout clause of €37 million, and Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Tuesday morning that a deal had been reached.
"We are obviously disappointed beyond measure, but emphasise that both Mario and his advisers have behaved absolutely conformity with the contract," said Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund's CEO, in a statement.
The Germany international will stay with BVB for the rest of the campaign before joining Bayern Munich on July 1, becoming the first acquisition of Pep Guardiola's reign with the club.
Borussia Dortmund's manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, added that he hoped fans of the club would continue to support the attacking midfielder for the remainder of his stay at the Westfalenstadion.
News of Gotze's transfer to Bayern comes on the day the German champions are set to face Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League, while Dortmund face Real Madrid in the last four on Wednesday.
