At the start of every season many managers in the Premier League look to strengthen their sides to qualify for a Champions League or to ensure survival in this very competitive league.

There has been a lot of money spent by the teams and some of the players really showed the reason for their value while others don't live up to the expectation.

With that said, we will take a look at the players who have really stepped up and delivered for their teams.

Here are a list of the top five signings of the 2012/13 season.

5. Christian Benteke

Benteke arrived at Aston Villa from Genk after some great performances for both club and country. He came at a cost of 7m but his displays makes this price seem like an absolutely steal.

He is just 22-years-old but he is very strong on the ball, has great pace and has shown that he is a good scorer. He has scored 19 goals in all competitions as well as having eight assists which is a wonderful return from a young player in a young Villa team battling for survival in the relegation zone.

Many thinks that whether Aston Villa stay up or not, they would do well to hold onto him as many big clubs are keeping a close eye on this young Belgian who is making a name for himself both in the Premiership and on the international stage.

4. Jan Vertonghen

The former Ajax captain moved to White Heart Lane after a long struggle for 10m. He was also a target of Arsenal but he chose the Spurs and he has shown great character since his move. He has been in great form all season and has lived up to the expectation of a player who captained the famous Ajax in the Dutch Eridivisie.

Vertonghen has shown his versatility as he has featured in central defence and at left back. He is very calm on the ball, positions himself very well, strong in the tackle and in the air and has a great strike on him in that gifted left foot.

He has scored six goals in all competitions and has also managed four assists for the Spurs. He is one of the reason the White Hart Lane Club made it to the quarter finals of the Europa League and are currently in a good position to finish in the top four.

3. Santi Cazorla

Cazorla moved to Arsenal after leading Malaga to their first ever Champions League qualification. He was captured by Arsene Wenger for about £15m who capitalised on the financial problems of the Spanish club. He arrived at the Emirates as a World Cup winner and  European Cup winner with Spain.

He is one of a few established players that Wenger has ever signed. He has been in great form all season for the Gunners all season as he scored 12 goals so far this season and has managed seven assists in all competitions. Cazorla is able to play behind the main striker or out wide on either wing. He is very composed on the ball and has the ability to unlock any defence with his creativity and killer passes.

He is comfortable with the ball on both feet and can strike the ball well with both feet. He is one of the reasons Arsenal made it out of the group stages in the Champions League and are still fighting for a top four finish.

2. Michu

Before his move to The Liberty Stadium,Michu was virtually an unknown player to the average football fan. He was captured by Michael Laudrup for just 2m after having a good season in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano.

Michu immediately made his impact as he scored a brace on debut. He has shown great composure in front of goal and is capable of playing as the main striker of just in behind the striker. He has managed 20 goals in all competitions for Swansea City and is the main reason they won the Capital One Cup.

Michu was tipped to be called up to the Spanish National Team as he was watch on several occasions by Spain Manager Vicente del Bosque. Michu has certainly made a name for himself this season and is a fan favourite at the Liberty Stadium. He is very strong in the air and has has the ability to cover lots of ground while dribbling with those long strides of his.

1. Robin van Persie

When Manchester United lost the title on goal difference last season to Manchester City, Sir Alex Ferguson was determine not to let it happen again and so he went out and got the top scorer from last season, Robin van Persie.

He came at a price of 24m and at an age that was not within the policy of the Red Devils but Sir Alex wanted an immediate impact. He did just that as he has been said to be the real difference between Man United and Man City.

Van Persie has scored 24 goals Premier League goals this season and Sir Alex Ferguson has even compared his impact to that of the man the Old Trafford refers to as the King, Eric Cantona. There is no doubt that the acquisition of Van Persie gave the entire United team a lift and they have marched on to be crowned Champions of England for a record 20 times with Van Persie capturing his first ever Championship medal.

He has done what was expected of him this season but he will certainly be looking to end the season on a high in order to have a strong claim to beat Gareth Bale and Lius Suarez for the Player of the Year.
