Suarez handed 10 game ban for Ivanovic bite

Published 1 Comments

Luis Suarez has been hit with a 10 game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on Sunday.

The FA confirmed the Liverpool striker had been handed an additional seven game suspension above the usual three-game ban for violent conduct, which the governing body confirmed yesterday was deemed 'insufficient."

Suarez pleaded guilty to the charge of violent conduct after replays showed the Uruguayan had bitten Ivanovic during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

"Luis Suarez has been suspended for a total of ten matches after an Independent Regulatory Commission today ruled on a charge of violent conduct," a statement on the FA's website read.

"A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission today upheld The FA’s claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect."

Suarez took to Twitter soon after the game to apologise for his actions, confirming that he had been fined by the club and had said sorry to Ivanovic directly.

Liverpool released a statement soon after the FA had made their decision public, and managing director Ian Ayre said that both club and player were 'shocked and disappointed' with the length of the ban.

"Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent Regulatory Commission decision," he said.

"We await the written reasons tomorrow before making any further comment."

Suarez has until midday on April 26 to contest the length of his ban. If unsuccessful he will miss the start of Liverpool's 2013/14 Premier League campaign and won't play for the Reds again until around October.
