Manchester United & Barcelona target turned down 'incredible' offers

Bayern Munich's executive director, Matthias Sammer has revealed that Mario Gotze - a target for Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid - turned down incredible offers before deciding to leave Borussia Dortmund.

Sky Sports reports how it was confirmed yesterday, that the 20-year-old midfielder will move to the Allianz Arena in a £32million deal, after the Bundesliga rivals activated the German international's release clause in his contract.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been credited with an interest in bringing Gotze to Old Trafford in the past, while La Liga rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid are also thought to have been monitoring the player's development.

However, all three top European clubs have been dealt a blow in their respective pursuits of one of the most highly rated attacking midfielders on the continent, after Bayern moved to secure his signature, ahead of the arrival of Pep Guardiola in 2013/14.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Sammer - a former Dortmund captain and manager, who is now part of the Bayern Munich hierarchy - admitted that the timing of the announcement was not ideal, given that both clubs were busy preparing for their Champions League semi-final clashes, and confirmed that no direct contact had been made with Gotze's current employers.

"You have to be aware that Mario Gotze has had incredible offers from other clubs. Those offers were really mad," he said.

"Of course, the publication of this transfer has not been so ideal. We intended to go public with it just after the UEFA Champions League semi-final fixtures.

"We haven't been in touch with Borussia Dortmund over it. Why should we? Mario Gotze has got a contract release clause and he is making use of it."
