Chelsea have launched an investigation in to fan behaviour after Yossi Benayoun claimed he has been targeted by sections of the fans at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year old Israeli midfielder who joined Chelsea in 2010 has not been a regular player for them.

He spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Arsenal and part of the current season at West Ham before returning to the club.

He has made 12 appearances for the club since his return, and was targeted by Chelsea fans during the 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Benayoun tweeted after the match: "Sometimes people are crossing the limit". I'm sure the club will sort it."

Since his return Benayoun has been targeted by groups of Chelsea fans. Although the reasons for the abuse is not certain it is suggested it could be that Benayoun has been sometimes preferred over Frank Lampard in the line-up.

His close relationship with out of favour Interim manager Rafa Benitez whom he played under at Liverpool could be another reason for this behaviour by the fans.

Benayoun had also stated on twitter that abuse against him started after he had defended Fernando Torres in a post-match interview.

Whatever the reason may be, Chelsea have a strong stance against any acts of discrimination and have banned supporters before for racially aggravated behaviour.

Although there is no evidence for racism yet, the matter is being investigated and it is expected that the tension between Benayoun and the fans will soon resolve after the club's intervention.
