Robin van Persie asked for Juventus blessing before Manchester United move

Robin van Persie is the main reason why Manchester United recently wrapped up a 20th league title and further solidified their status as the most successful English club.

But without their main man, would the same success have been achieved?

Van Persie joined Manchester United from Arsenal last August, which was a sad day for Arsenal as their fans hoped that their captain would either stay, or at least do the honourable thing and move abroad; instead he opted to 'listen to the little boy inside of him’ who was screaming for Manchester United.

Now, having won his first Premier League title in his first campaign at Old Trafford, which will see Arsenal receive £1.5m - as Van Persie’s contract stated Manchester United must pay that sum if he is to win the Premier League or the Champions League within the next four years - Sky Sports Italia have claimed that Van Persie was close to joining Italian giants Juventus - and even asked them for permission to sign for the Red Devils.

A whole host of clubs were after Van Persie, who enjoyed a marvellous campaign with Arsenal which saw him earn the PFA Player of the Year award, with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus interested in him.

It has been reported that Van Persie actually asked permission from Juventus before signing for Manchester United. He was extremely close to signing for The Old Lady, and even went as far as agreeing personal terms.

The move did not come to fruition because Arsenal were not budging from the £25m price-tag hanging above the Dutchman’s head.

However, once Manchester United made it crystal clear than Van Persie was the man they wanted, and were prepared to pay that sum, Arsenal had no choice but to let their star man go.

This then resulted in Van Persie asking Juventus for their blessing to complete the transfer, as he did not want it to seem as if he was snubbing the Bianconeri after already agreeing personal terms, and did not want to disrespect the club and the history behind it.

Juventus managing director then made it clear that the club were never going to be able to pay that amount of money for a player who was towards the end of his contract, while his wages would have also been a major problem.

Juventus did however manage to lure in a Gunner: Nicklas Bendtner.

There is no doubt that every Arsenal fan would have preferred to see Van Persie playing in black and white, rather than the red of arch-rivals Manchester United, and this season’s title race could have also been a completely different story had he moved to Turin instead.
