Everton boss David Moyes is keen to micro-manage Ross Barkley's first team progress as he returns from an injury-thwarted campaign at Goodison Park. 

"There is expectation around him and there has been a lot of talk but he has missed a lot of football through injury. We have to manage him correctly and give him time," Moyes told Yahoo! in a press release sent to GiveMeFootball.com.

The 19-year-old Toffees youth prospect has spent time on loan at both Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United in the Championship, and has impressed since his return to Merseyside - most notably in the Premier League match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the month. 

"We sent him out on loan to get experience and we will use him when feel it is the right moment to put him into the team," the manager added.

Barkley is one of a long line of Everton youngsters to thrive and develop before joining the first team, with players including Wayne Rooney coming through the ranks at the club. The Blues manager was quick to praise the policy on giving youngsters a chance, and believes it has helped his first team thrive for several years. 

"The key is always that you have an academy which is trying to develop and bring through as many of your own local boys as possible. That has tended to be where we have done well in finding some good local talent and with us having a small squad it means we give them a chance sooner than some other clubs,"  Moyes continued.

"I am a great believer in giving young boys opportunities, and if they are doing well I will always try and put them in the team and give them a chance."

Everton will be hoping Barkley continues his progress, and can replicate the fantastic development Rooney showed during his time at Goodison Park before making a big-money move to Manchester United back in the summer of 2004.
